Maya began his artistic journey as a self-taught artist. His passion for the craft led him to a striking encounter with teacher Elsa Castro in the city of Villa Clara. Under her guidance, Maya honed his skills and acquired essential concepts in drawing and painting, laying the foundation for his artistic prowess. He then studied for a degree in art and expanded his vision of the creative process in Havana.
