Introducing Shot by Clint, a South African photographer whose work is inspired by a deep connection to nature, travel, and the stories found in the world's most remarkable places. How did Shot by Clint actually start? Was there one specific trip or a particular photo where you realized this was becoming more than just a hobby.
- As a professional photographer, I’ve had the privilege of traveling to unique destinations around the globe. Through these journeys and my own lived experiences, I capture life as it unfolds through the lens of my camera. For over two decades, I’ve been collecting these images, and I realized they deserved to be seen rather than sitting on a hard drive. That’s why I created Shot by Clint, a platform to share the moments, places, and stories I’ve been fortunate to witness and capture, so others can enjoy them too.
Do you remember your very first camera or early experiences taking photos? How did those early experiments shape your approach today?
- My first camera was a Nikon EM 35mm film camera, my dad’s. I started shooting with it around the age of 12, and it marked a pivotal moment in my life. Having access to that camera at such a young age sparked my passion for photography and shaped the path I would go on to follow.
You mention a fascination with “untouched textures and forgotten places.” How do you find these locations? Do you go looking for something specific, or let the environment surprise you?
- This could be on my travels or right on my doorstep. It’s about perspective and a way of seeing the world.

- I believe it is my style, developed and refined over time. Being an artist is not a race; it is endurance. With time, you grow stronger and more in tune with your craft.
When you’re out photographing, do you ever think about the final “wall”? Does the thought of an image hanging in someone’s home or a hotel lobby influence the way you compose a shot?
- No, not really. However, I consider its ability to connect with an audience and stand alone as a finished artwork.
- I believe it is my style, developed and refined over time. Being an artist is not a race; it is endurance. With time, you grow stronger and more in tune with your craft.
When you’re out photographing, do you ever think about the final “wall”? Does the thought of an image hanging in someone’s home or a hotel lobby influence the way you compose a shot?
- No, not really. However, I consider its ability to connect with an audience and stand alone as a finished artwork.
How do you handle the “business” side of your creativity? Is it challenging to balance images you take for yourself versus those intended for licensing or public display?
- I’ve always been naturally good at this. I have a strong, strategic, and organized mind, yet I can also flow freely in a creative space, a bit of a “split personality,” I suppose.
Of all the places you’ve been, which one felt the most “enchanted”? Is there a story behind one of your nature studies that the audience wouldn’t know just by looking at the print?
- I don’t have any favorites. Sometimes it’s not the place that matters, but the subject, or what I choose to frame through the lens — and that can happen anywhere. What exists outside the frame is often in direct contrast to what’s captured within it. If I had to name a place that truly reflects the feeling and perspective found in a collection, it would be Sri Lanka.
What’s the one piece of advice you’d give to someone trying to build a brand like yours, especially when it comes to staying authentic while pursuing a professional photography career?
- Always be ready. Stay organized with your image library. Be prepared to shoot at any moment of the day. Relax and have fun.
Looking back, who or what has been your biggest influence or inspiration in photography, and why?
- I’m a fine art graduate, and being influenced by a range of art forms and mediums has shaped my unique perspective. I often find inspiration outside the traditional lane of photography. I am my own biggest critic and my strongest motivator.
- I’ve always been naturally good at this. I have a strong, strategic, and organized mind, yet I can also flow freely in a creative space, a bit of a “split personality,” I suppose.
